I’m sitting and racking my brain trying to think of something to post to this blog. I know I have a policy of never letting more than two days go by without posting but I am drawing a blank. Just staring at the empty screen. Every idea that pops in my head I am rejecting because it is either inane, boring or will give out too much information (i.e. my nieces’ birthday presents).
This leads me to think about professional writers who write every day. I understand that some authors will write every day even setting a goal of two chapters a day or something like that. Wouldn’t that just lead to a tremendous amount of frustration? What if the person is having a blank day, like I am having, and can’t think of the next part of the story? But the goal is to write something EVERY DAY!!! Oh no!! Must write something. MUST. And, I think, that is how stupid things get written.
Have you ever been reading a book and come across a part, either a few paragraphs or a chapter, that seems really strained or convoluted? I think that happens because an author sets unrealistic goals. After all, writing is a creative process. It isn’t like being a CPA and calculating figures all day. Or being a scientist and working on formulas all day. Writing is more of an ebb and flow type of work. And if it isn’t flowing, I don’t think it should be forced.
Not that I’m a professional writer by any stretch of the imagination. But I do understand how the creative process works and I think creativity can’t be forced. It has to come naturally. Otherwise it isn’t what it could be and the overall work will suffer.
Anyway, that is my opinion (which is kind of obvious since this is my blog – thus everything is my opinion). And, a bonus, I have a posting for today. Now…what shall I post tomorrow??? Oh well, tomorrow is another day and I don’t need to think about that until then. Oops…I seem to be channeling Scarlett O’Hara. Now THAT might be an interesting posting….hmmmm.
