Most Common

I believe that the most common conversation has to do with the weather.  The last few days have been pretty bad, weather wise.  Cold, rainy, rain mixed with snow, windy, yucky.  Just plain yucky.  Today is beautiful, in comparison.  It’s partly cloudy, warm (63 degrees) and the winds are calm.  A lovely spring day.

I had to run errands for work this afternoon.  Everywhere I went, people commented on the weather.  The same conversation, over and over again.

“Isn’t it beautiful out?”

“Yes, it is” I would reply

“Just wait for tomorrow!”

“Actually it’s going to start tonight,” I would say.

“I guess we should enjoy this”

“Yes, we should!”

Over and over again.  The same conversation.

I guess it’s a way to be friendly and to interact with each other.  A way to keep us in touch with the strangers we meet so we aren’t just going through life ignoring people.  I’m sure it has been the same since the beginning of time.  From the first cavemen pointing at the sun and grunting and smiling or gathering around the fire and shivering because it is raining or snowing to now where we actually have a TV channel dedicated to the weather…talking about the weather has to be the most common conversation.  Maybe someday if we live on the moon under a doom with computer-regulated weather, we will find another common conversation.  Not sure what that would be although I suspect that it will still have to do with the weather.  It will just be about the weather back home on Earth.
