Freezing Rain

Woke up this morning to quite a surprise. Freezing rain!

Actually, I didn’t realize it was freezing rain outside. I was getting ready to go to Bible Class and a friend called me to tell me that the roads were really bad and people were sliding all over the place. I looked outside and, sure enough, ice everywhere!

We went back and forth with phone calls for a while and I decided that I would head down to church anyway. After all, we were pretty sure that someone was heading in to church for class who was 80 and had quite a distance to drive. If she could do it, I could do it.

Or so I thought. I salted a path to my car, cleaned it off and started on my way. I slid out of the driveway into the street but chalked that up to my driveway being untreated. The roads must be treated since it had been raining for a while and rush hour traffic was in full swing. I drove very slowly down my street, never going over 5 mph and very carefully slid to a stop at the end of my street.

As I sat there waiting for traffic to clear enough for me to ease out into it, I watched as everyone crawled along at around the same speed I had been traveling (5 mph) and tried to figure out why I was doing this. Why was I risking my life to go to a Bible Class that only lasted an hour? Not to mention risking damaging the only vehicle I own. I decided the risk wasn’t worth it and I very carefully turned the corner, went around the block and headed for home.

When I arrived home, I called my pastor and told him I wasn’t going to make it. He agreed that was the correct decision and felt that hardly anyone would be there. After I talked to him, I called my friend to let her know and she said she was going to wait at church to see if anyone did show up. She lives pretty close to the church as does our pastor so they were able to make it pretty easily. (I wish I lived that close to church…maybe someday).

After I got off the phone, I realized that my hands were shaking. It really scared me that much to drive on icy roads. I don’t mind driving on snow but freezing rain really frightens me. Lucky for me, I didn’t have to worry about going in to work so I was able to decide to stay safely at home and not risk driving on very slippery roads. Thank God for unseen blessings!

PS: Found out later that the 80 year old woman did make it to church for Bible Class. Of course she did follow a sand truck in to town. I heard that she decided to go to church following the sand truck because that is the direction the truck was heading. If the truck had been heading in the direction of her house, she would have headed back home. Very logical. Still…feel kind of wimpy that an 80 year old woman could drive a long distance on bad roads to go to Bible Class and I couldn’t do the same. Oh well. Still think I made the right decision.
