Fresh Veggies

I love the Farmer’s Market!  I only discovered the joy of the Farmer’s Market in the last few years.  Before that, I almost always bought my vegetables at the grocery store.  Then I started going to farm stands but that can be a little iffy.  At the Farmer’s Market, the farms are all in competition with each other and they bring out their best.

As you know, I am single, so buying fresh vegetables is always tricky.  I can’t buy too much because I will never eat it all before it spoils.  So I have to think about what I can possibly eat in the next few days and only buy that much and ignore all the other wonderful veggies calling out to me to buy them.

I have decided on my favorites.  I have discovered the joy that is Harris Farm corn.  Something about the soil in Dayton, ME or maybe the way they grow it but it has to be the best corn I have ever eaten.  I don’t even peel back the husk or even feel the ears that much.  While everyone else is peeling back a little of the husk and then tossing it back or peeling the whole ear (which does dry it out), I just pick up two or four ears and go pay for them.  I have never bought a bad ear of corn from them.  Yum!

I have also discovered joy of fresh basil from Snell Family Farms and thus discovered pesto!  I started making pesto a few years ago and, the first year, went a little crazy with it.  I gave away a bunch of little containers of it and still ended up with 14 containers in my freezer.  I just love the whole process of making it and love the taste of it on everything from pasta to eggs to mashed potatoes.  This year I have only made one and a half batches so I only have four containers in my freezer.  I may make one more batch before the season is over.  Or maybe two.  But I will definitely stop at two.  I think…..

Anyway, if you get a chance, check out your local Farmer’s Market.  The difference in taste between the fresh veggies and the supermarket stuff is remarkable.  Just watch out for them calling out to you.  They do that and then you end up with 14 containers of pesto in the freezer!!
