I had quite the dilemma today. Should I nap this afternoon or should go to a play?
I did have this afternoon scheduled for exhaustion. After all the monthly bean supper at church was yesterday and I was on my feet from 7:30 am until 6:45 pm, when we finally shut off the lights and everyone headed home. I am the one to start the beans in the morning and then do all the other things throughout the day to prepare for the supper (bake pies, set up the kitchen, help set up the dessert and bread tables, make biscuits, warm the brown bread, etc.). But usually, by the time we get down to serving, I am able to sit behind the dessert table and visit with people while making sure things run well. I do fill in as needed and help with the clean up but I also get to sit and rest a while.
Yesterday I had a few new volunteers and we handed out some mac & cheese meals (not made but ingredients in a bag that we made at a special event in January) and I had to assist more than I normally do. By the time I arrived home, my feet hurt and I was so tired I could hardly move.
I had mentioned to someone at the meal that I was scheduled to be exhausted on Sunday afternoon. I knew that I just wanted to come home from Sunday’s services, eat lunch and then take a nap. At least that was my plan yesterday.
When I was waiting for the service to start this morning, I was visiting with a friend at the back of the sanctuary. A mutual friend came in (let’s call her “Kathy”) and asked me what I was doing in the afternoon. I said I was scheduled to be exhausted and was going to nap. She asked me if I wanted to go to a play instead. She wanted to treat me to the play for my birthday. I was already tired and hesitated to just say yes. She saw my hesitation and said to think about it and let her know when the service was over.
I thought about it during the service. It was very nice of “Kathy” to invite me to go with her to the play and I really do love to see a good play. There is also the fact that three of the actors were people who are members of our church (a mother and her two sons). An additional incentive.
But I was so tired. I didn’t sleep well Friday night and didn’t sleep as long as I wanted to Saturday night. The problem last night was probably because I was so tired that it was hard to just relax and sleep. I was longing to just lie down and sleep.
So what should I do? Nap or Play?
Half way through the service I realized what I wanted to do. I wanted to go to the play. I figured that if I drank a large iced tea (from Dunkin Donuts), it would perk me up enough that I would be able to stay awake through the play.
After the service, I saw “Kathy” and told her I would love to go to the play with her. She said she would pick me up at 1:45 and we would head up to South Portland for the performance.
I am so glad I went!! The play was “Dirty, Rotten Scoundrels”. I have never seen the movie and but I did know the basic premise of the story. The actors did really well with great timing, wonderful singing and dancing. It was funny and entertaining and a bit raunchy….which made it even more funny.
It was well worthy missing my nap for and the best decision. Granted, I was tired but the caffeine from the tea woke me up. And I can always go to bed early tonight. Probably won’t but I could.
I have mentioned before that I love my birthday and I truly do. It was almost a month ago and I am still receiving presents. Not to mention there is a birthday dinner scheduled with my friends for this coming Friday. It feels wonderful to be so loved and cared for that my friends want to treat me for my birthday even though the date is well passed. Which was a huge motivation to skip the nap and go to the play. I love my birthday and will never turn down an opportunity to celebrate it.
Oh, by the way, if you ever get a chance to attend a performance at any of the fine theaters in the Portland, ME area, please do. The actors are talented and the productions are very well done!! Well worth skipping naps for!!!
