Hiding

I hid behind air conditioning today. It was blasted hot all day.

When I woke up this morning, it was an effort to breathe. I still have bronchitis (yes, since January) and also have allergies to pollen. Since it was so humid out and the pollen level was enormously high, I was having problems breathing. I finally had to use my inhaler just to get some relief.

Yet, with the trouble breathing, I still opened all my windows first thing in the morning. When I watched the weather they said it was going to be in the 90’s today and air quality would be poor. So I knew that I would eventually have to close things up and turn on the air conditioner. But I wanted to enjoy the summer air for at least a couple of hours.

By 10:00, the air was very heavy and the heat was rising. So I shut all the windows and turned the air conditioner to 60. Within an hour, my apartment was nice and cool.

Around 3:00 in the afternoon, I thought, “I wonder if it is all that hot outside?”. So I opened the door and stuck my head out. It was like sticking my head in a furnace! Wicked hot!

As I closed my door it occurred to me that with the cool air on the inside of my apartment and the heat outside, a storm should have formed right over my head while I stood in the door. Then again, I know it takes more than that to create a storm. After all, that would mean that small storms would form in the doorways of every building that runs air conditioning. Wouldn’t that be an interesting phenomena? There would have to be some kind of storm shield in every doorway. Strange the thoughts that pass through my mind.

This evening a real storm did come through complete with wind, thunder, lightening and heavy rain. Shortly after it passed, I stuck my head outside again and it was cooler outside. The air smelled freshly washed and it was easier to breathe. I still kept the air on until I went to bed. I don’t like to have my windows open at night (except in the bedroom) and saw no reason to open them all up for just an hour or so.

I am hoping that this isn’t a sign of things to come. Meaning I am hoping that this summer isn’t going to be incredibly hot and humid. Otherwise I will have a whole summer of hiding behind the air conditioner.
