I watch the weather every morning mostly to try to figure out what to wear. If it is going to be particularly cold out, I will wear a heavy sweater and possibly my boots. If it is going to be mild (above 30 degrees), then I will opt for a light sweater and regular shoes.
The last few days, I have been watching the weather to see what they are predicting for this Saturday. My church is scheduled to have our monthly free bean supper that day and I’m trying to decide if we will have to cancel it. I’m in charge so it is my decision and I am fretting because I want to make the right decision.
If I misjudge and the weather turns out to be nice, then we should have held it and I look like I was WAY over cautious. If we have it and the weather turns out to be particularly nasty and, heaven forbid, someone gets in an accident driving to or from the supper, then I will feel so bad for having made the wrong decision.
I had a meeting this evening at church and asked some of our older and wiser members what they thought. They felt that we should wait until tomorrow morning to decide and maybe even do some of the prep work and wait until Saturday morning to decide.
That is part of the stress of making this decision. Since we make the meal from scratch, the beans need to be soaked overnight. So we need to decide by Friday morning whether or not to have the supper so we don’t waste 10 pounds of beans. But, as was pointed out to me, that is only about $11 worth of beans and we could just dump them if they have been soaked and we decide to cancel the supper. Then again, I need to do all the shopping for the meal on Friday night and that includes a lot of perishable items such as cabbage and onions. Some of it can be frozen for next month like the bacon and hot dogs. But we can’t freeze the cabbage and it will just go to waste.
So that is my dilemma. The weather people are so varied in their predictions right now that some are saying light snow showers and others are saying a significant snowfall while others are saying three inches of snow but then a long period of sleet. The sleet would be awful because it is just nasty to try to walk or drive when it is sleeting.
A number of the volunteers for the supper are elderly and a couple are over 80. Also a number of the people who attend the supper are elderly or disabled. Is it worth risking their lives just for a simple bean supper?
The person who used to be in charge had a firm policy that we never cancel it. NEVER. But I always thought that was a little too strict and we need to be considerate of the people who volunteer and attend and not put their lives at risk. Now that I am in charge, we have canceled once before for snow and twice because the supper landed on a holiday weekend.
What to do???? I guess I will wait and watch the weather in the morning and then try to make a decision. I will post my decision tomorrow…
