It is going to be really hot today. It was hot and humid yesterday and, when I arrived home from work, I noticed that my cats were lying on the floor in the kitchen. Normally they sit on the table looking out the window or lie on the couch but on really hot days, they tend to lie on the floor and preferably on the kitchen floor since that is the coolest for them.
This morning, when I was getting ready to leave the house and making sure things were ok, as in everything turned off and things put away, I checked the cat’s food and water. The food level was fine (they have a gravity feeder for their dry food) and the water level was fine (same thing for the water as the food – gravity container so the their water dish is always refilling automatically). But I thought that it would be nice if the water would be cold instead of at room temperature. So I dumped about six ice cubes in the water.
As I was leaving, I was saying good-bye to the cats when I noticed they were both sitting in front of the water dish watching the ice cubes. I went over to see what the problem was and they were simply entranced with the white things floating in their water. It was the oddest thing. Normally, when I’m leaving, they like to sit where I can pet them one last time before I leave – Kismet likes to pace on the kitchen table hoping I will rub her head one more time and Cupid rubs up against my legs. So when I went back to the door, I told them I was leaving and expected them to come over for one last pat on the head. Nothing. They just sat there staring at the ice cubes. “I’m leaving”, I said again. Nothing. Finally, feeling a little snubbed, I just left. Silly cats. It was just ice cubes. But apparently what for me would be a nice treat, ice water, for them is alien beings invading their water. Then again, they are cats of little brains.
