Power was finally restored at work today! It only took 4 1/2 days. During the big storm last Thursday night, a tree fell and landed on our power lines. It didn’t take them down but it disrupted the power enough that we had to use our generator. Unfortunately, our generator was bought for our old location and it isn’t sufficient for this large of a building. We were only able to run a few things like freezers and the furnace in the one end of the building (we have two furnaces), a few of the lights and the phone system. Made work a bit of a challenge. We ended up leaving early on Friday and on Monday. And throughout the weekend, someone had to come by every 12 hours to re-fuel the generator. Luckily for me, I was not on that detail. Unlucky for me, the furnace that was hooked to the generator wasn’t the one in my end of the building so my office was freezing yesterday. I did go home around 12:30 but sitting in the cold all morning made my bronchitis worse. That didn’t make me very happy last night.
When the power company guys showed up today around 11:00, we all stopped what we were doing and watched them as they worked on restoring our power. It was more complicated than I thought it would be but it was fascinating to watch. Actually, we were mostly intrigued with the idea that we were about to have electricity again. My boss was so happy that he gave the workers half of the homemade oatmeal cookies that one of our people brought in today (must have been how she spent her afternoon off). One of the guys I work with commented that power company linemen must gain weight during a crisis like this just from all the goodies they receive from grateful customers.
As I mentioned in a previous posting, I don’t do well without electricity and especially without heat. I am so glad that everything is back to normal and that I am warm and comfortable again. I am hoping that the weather will stay nice until spring but I have my doubts. After all, it is only the beginning of March and March tends to be a rough month in Maine. Oh well, makes one appreciate the little things in life. Like lights, heat, refrigeration, and being able to post to my blog!
