My niece, Alexa, gave her parents a book for Christmas entitled “The Secret Knowledge of Kids”. It is a collection of stories written by her class and is actually bound in a real book (which is more than what would have happen when I was growing up….when we did something like this, it would have been stapled together with construction paper). The preface of the book says “Based on the book, The Secret Knowledge of Grown-Ups, by David Wisniewski” and goes on to say “We dedicate this book to our parents and caregivers and hope that this book gives them a better understanding of who we are and why we do the things we do!”
I think that Alexa’s story is very well written and deserves a larger audience. With my sister’s permission, I am posting the story here for all to see:
Kid rule number #23: Why Kids Leave Lights On
By Alexa, age 9
Location: Lamp World, Inc. Nashville, Tennessee
Time and Date: 12:00 a.m. August 29
Official Reason: I’m Scared
Real Reason: For hundreds of years, kid’s parents have been saying this simple little sentence. “Turn off your lights.” But, kids are wiser, oh so much wiser. They don’t listen because if children turn off their lights, then the boogie monster will come out and destroy all the lights, lamps and the sun! And, if anyone tries to stop him, he will spike them with his rocket ship and barbecue them for dinner. And, when all the lights are finished off, he will take over the world. And, then all the species will die out and you will die too. That is why kids don’t turn off their lights.
How is that for a logical explanation? I don’t know about you but I am thinking of sleeping with the lights on from now on. After all, children are wiser than adults. Alexa says so and I believe her.
