A friend answered a poll on facebook the other day. Which do you believe, creation or evolution? She voted evolution. I commented that I think I believe in both.
To me it’s like my spaghetti sauce. My dad taught me how to make spaghetti sauce when I was young. He was in charge of dinner on Saturday nights and, most of the time, he made spaghetti. As I grew up, I eventually was given the responsibility to make the sauce and I began tweaking it. Adding a little bit of this and a little bit of that. It has evolved into something slightly similar to what Dad taught me but, I think, improved. I really like my sauce and am pretty satisfied with the recipe as it stands. That’s not to say I’m not open to more changes but, right now, I can’t imagine what changes I could make to it.
So, the world I think is like God’s spaghetti sauce. God created the world. In six days. Yeah, I know, hard to believe. But how do we know that the days were same length of time they are now? We weren’t there. Why are we putting human limitations on what God did?
But, after He rested on the seventh day, He sat back and studied His creation. And the tweaking began. First He had to deal with the whole Adam and Eve issue. He creates these lovely companions to walk in the garden with Him and gave them only one simple rule. Don’t eat from the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden. Did they obey??? Noooo….Eve listened to the talking serpent and ate the fruit. Then gave some to Adam and he ate it. They looked down, saw they were naked, covered themselves and hid from God. When He found out, he threw them out of the garden. The first tweaking.
As time went on, He tweaked other things. Dinosaurs turned out to be a not so good idea so they became extinct. Mammoths, with their long furry coats, became impractical so they had to go. Same with the saber tooth lion. Lions are scary enough without two big teeth hanging down.
God eventually became tired and ticked off about the way man was behaving in this world so He sent the flood to wipe out the planet. Saved Noah and his family and enough animals to re-populate the earth again. This was a MAJOR tweak on His part.
Since the world bears hardly any resemblance to where it was after the flood, it is obvious that things have evolved over time. Some more animals became extinct. Man learned and developed and invented things and made big cities. Yeah, man has also done a lot of damage to the world but God created the world to replenish itself so, if we stop damaging it, the world will heal. Another tweaking process.
So, do I believe in the Creation? Yes, I do. Do I also believe in evolution? Yes, I do. Just like my spaghetti sauce, which I have tweaked over the years to the glorious recipe it is today; God has tweaked the world to the wondrous place it is today. The exciting thing is that God isn’t done yet. Not by a long shot. There’s no telling where He will take us in the future or what the world will look like 100, 200, 500 or 1000 years from now. God knows but He’s not sharing.
