Today I made what I think is the last pesto batch this season. Well, let me clarify…the last pesto batch I will make this season. It isn’t the last pesto batch ever. At least, I don’t think so.
Anyway, the farmer’s market season is dying down and they are rapidly running out of fresh vegetables. It is almost down to just apples and pumpkins. It’s just so sad!
I have heard they are planning an indoor market in the area for the winter but I think that will be mostly pre-made things (jams, baked goods, etc.) and not so much the fresh veggie thing.
Actually, in looking back over the summer, it really was a good one all the way around. I was able to go boating six times (beats the one time we went last year), I made it to the beach a couple of times and I bought a lot of fresh vegetables at both the farmer’s market and at farm stands.
I am planning on going to the farmer’s market again this next week just to see if they have any final bunches of basil. If they do, I may get one more batch in season. Although, now that I think about it, I may not have room in my freezer for it. It is full of freshly frozen vegetables, pesto and containers of the batch of spaghetti sauce I made last week. Oh well, maybe I’ll be the basil anyway and use it to make something else besides pesto. Tomato basil salad, fresh tomato sauce, salad dressing…things like that.
Last pesto means summer is officially over (bet you didn’t know that!). It is on to fall colors, cooler weather and the countdown to the holidays. Sigh…hope fall is just as wonderful as summer…for everyone!
