They did it. They killed him.
Troy Davis was put to death last night for a crime that he might not have committed. I can’t believe they actually did it.
There wasn’t any DNA evidence linking him to the crime. There wasn’t hardly any evidence at all. The only evidence was eye witness testimony and everyone knows that is highly unreliable. Especially when seven of the eye witnesses retracted their statements.
They say he killed a cop. Which, understandably, makes cops very angry. It is scary enough to be a police officer or in law enforcement in any form without having one of your own killed. That would bring the likelihood that you might die to life. If it happened to him, it could happen to me, they must think.
So these scared and angry police officers are the ones in charge of solving the murder of a fellow police officer. Is this really wise? Some people have the gift of being cold and objective but many people are filled with a passion for their job and for their fellow workers. It just seems to me that they should have other people come in and solve the murders of police officers. Maybe the FBI. Or police officers from another city. People who aren’t personally attached to the case.
I mention this because some of the witnesses in the Troy Davis’ case say they were coerced by the police in making their statements. They were intimidated and scared so they would say they saw Troy Davis kill the cop. Again, people really shouldn’t be interrogated by people who are emotionally attached to a murder. It just causes problems.
As I have said before, I don’t agree with the death penalty. It just is not a humane way of dealing with criminals. We should be beyond this. We should be more advanced than this. We should find a better way of dealing with antisocial behavior.
I wonder how all the people who were so sure that Troy Davis was guilty will feel if he is discovered to be innocent. How will they be able to sleep at night? How will they live with themselves knowing that an innocent man was killed, just like the cop?
Maybe Troy Davis will be the example we need to abolish the death penalty. Maybe this will help trigger the end to this sort of “justice”. Let’s hope this happens. Let’s hope we all grow and advance and stop killing people for killing people.
My thoughts and prayers are with Troy Davis’ family and friends as they mourn his loss. And my thoughts and prayers are with the police officer’s family and friends. Maybe Troy Davis’ killing will give them peace…although I doubt it.
