Synod Assembly Day Two

Today started with a great breakfast then on to a wonderful worship service.

At the service, they served communion in a very unique way. They had a small plate, napkin and goblet on each table. They came around at the beginning of communion and gave each table a small piece of pita bread and filled the goblet part of the way with wine. Then the designated leader at the table started serving by turning to the person next to them and giving them a piece of bread saying “the body of Christ given for you”. That person then took the bread, gave a small piece to the person next to them and said the same thing until the bread went all the way around the table. Then the wine was passed around with each person serving the person next to them saying “the blood of Christ, shed for you”. Then the bread was passed around again with each person taking a small piece until it was done since they weren’t going to collect it.

It was a very personal way of receiving communion. Each person was serving and was served. I thought it was lovely and asked my pastor later if we could do that sometime at our church and he said we probably could.

I’m sure that when Christ instituted this, he didn’t serve each individual disciple but passed the elements around the table. So this way of serving communion is more in line with what Jesus did and brings it much more to life. As I said, a very personal way of communing.

After the service, we all broke out into our work groups. I was with the prayer shawl people and we spent the afternoon discussing craft projects and working on shawls. I learned how to crochet and am in the process of crocheting my first prayer shawl.  Learning also enabled me to meet a new friend and have  a wonderful conversation. It was a very rewarding experience all the way around.

Tomorrow is the last day of the assembly and it starts pretty early in the morning so I had better toddle off to bed.  Have a good night!!
