Today is my brother Dave’s birthday. I would tell you how old he is but then people would be able to figure out how old I am since he is my younger brother. Let’s just say that he is firmly planted in adulthood.
I remember when my brother was born. I was 3 ½ and was aware that there was going to be a new addition to the family. Then, one day, my mom was gone and Mrs. L. was taking care of us. It was unusual for my mom to not be home since she was a stay-at-home mom and seemed to always be there. I don’t remember her leaving for the hospital and I am thinking she may have left before I woke up that morning. A few days later, my parents came home with this little bundle all wrapped up in blankets. My mom sat down and showed Ted (my big brother) and I the baby. I looked at this little thing and asked if it was a boy or a girl. Mom said it is a boy. “But I wanted a sister!” I said and went storming off to my room. I already had a brother. Why would I want another one of those????
Of course, this was only a temporary reaction. I soon realized that Dave was a cute kid to have around and we had fun playing together. And, eventually, I did get the sister I wanted and all became right in the world.
I do find it interesting that at 3 ½, I was already sure about what I wanted and not afraid to express my opinion on the subject. Hmmm…I guess some personality quirks are established early in life.
Anyway, I may not have been too happy the day you were brought home, Dave, but I am really glad you were born!! I do love you and hope your birthday was absolutely grand!!!
