Today’s Thoughts (7/16/09)

Thoughts that are roaming around my head as I drink my morning tea:

-On the news this morning…. two years ago, a woman in Spain gave birth to twin boys. Not really newsworthy? This woman was 66 years old. Decided she wanted kids, went through fertility treatments and successfully gave birth. I remember hearing about this when it happened and all the fuss about her age and how she was a single mother and should the doctors have really let this happen. Actually the doctors didn’t even know she was 66 since she told them she was 55 so they can’t really be at fault…if there is fault to be given. The reason this woman and her babies were on the news was that she died this past weekend at 69, leaving behind the two-year old boys. That brings the whole question of how old is too old to have babies to the forefront of the news. Should she have done this? Should the doctors have been more careful in vetting her? Isn’t it irresponsible to bring children in the world when the odds are you won’t be around to raise them? Well, there is no guarantee that a woman in her 20’s will live to see her children grow up. And this woman was playing the odds but the odds where kind of in her favor since her mom lived to be 101. How can anyone judge whether or not someone will live to see his or her children reach adulthood? The odds of being hit by a bus increase dramatically when you live in a city. So shouldn’t everyone live in the country just to be safe? No one knows what the future holds. This woman played the odds and brought two beautiful little boys into the world. I just hope those who get the honor of raising them keeps her memory alive.

-I finally bought new stamps the other day since I ran out of forever stamps. The new flag stamps are really much nicer than the old flag stamps. I like the design and the colors seem more vibrant. The 44 cents is a bit much to take. I hate to age myself but I remember when a first class stamp was 20 cents. What I find interesting about the Postal Service raising the postage rate all the time is the reason they give. They say that with the rise in people using e-mail and texting and the like, people are mailing less through snail mail and so, in order to be profitable, they need to raise the rates to compensate. But won’t this make people want to use e-mail, texting, faxing, etc. to save money? And so won’t their revenue drop even further? Maybe I’m not fully understanding the thought process behind raising the rates but it seems a little counter productive to make something people aren’t using because it is expensive even more expensive. Strange…

-Since a lot of technology that was on the original Star Trek series has already come to fruition (discs to store data, cell phones that look like communicators, etc.) I have one I think would be handy…wouldn’t it be great if we had some kind of medical scan in our homes? Sort of like a little booth we can step into and a computer will tell us how we are doing. If we have contracted a little virus or are coming down with the flu, we can find out early and nip it in the bud. If we fell and landed wrong on our hand, we can have the scan tell us whether we need to go to the hospital and have the bone re-set or if it is just a bad sprain. I think this would cut back on a lot of medical problems we have and ease up the traffic in emergency rooms. Just an idea I had…

Well, the tea is getting cold so I need to go re-heat it.  Hope everyone has a wonderfully pleasant day!!
