Today was the annual Blueberry Festival at church. We hold it once a year and sell crafts and baked goods mostly having to do with blueberries. I didn’t bake anything for it and barely helped. I wasn’t going to help at all but I stopped by early this morning to buy some stuff before the crowds started arriving and I ended up staying and helping until close to noon. It’s hard to say “no” when someone hands you a camera and says “here, take pictures”. I could have said no but then someone else would be taking the pictures and those pictures might have included me. This way I was on the other side of the camera.
The festival was a big success. I’m not sure how much we raised but people started coming in at 9:00 when the doors opened and it was steady all morning. The baked goods were a huge hit…especially the homemade donuts. Some people bought them in bags (they were selling them for 50 cents each) to take home to their families. The other big hit was the blueberry shortcake with fresh whipped cream. That ended up being my breakfast, along with one of the homemade donuts. It was a big serving of shortcake that I couldn’t finish but I gave it a valiant effort.
I did buy some of the baked goods to take to work to share. I also bought some of the crafts including a tea cozy (always wanted one of those for my teapot) and a cute, yet odd looking, stuffed “animal” for my youngest niece. I say “animal” because it doesn’t look like any kind of animal and it isn’t a doll. It has a face and arms and legs and weird square “ears” on top of it’s head. Sort of like an alien stuffed animal. But it is squishy and cute and just the thing a little girl can drag around with her.
I know these kinds of festivals are hard work but the money raised is going to a very good cause, a free clinic for people without insurance, and everyone has a good time. I hope we do it again next year. Maybe I’ll have more time to help out making crafts and baking things. If not, they do very well without my help. It was nice to just attend and take a few pictures. I may have to try to do that more with events around the church. Maybe after the pot luck I am organizing and the pancake breakfast I am going to help with and the monthly bean suppers and…..sigh….oh well, helping out is just as much fun as being a passive observer.
